Grundy Wins State Accolade

Several members of Grundy Woman’s Club attended the GFWC VA Convention at Virginia Beach and brought home some state recognition.

Held April 28 to May 1, the 2022 GFWC Virginia Annual Convention was the first in-person convention of GFWC Virginia since the coronavirus pandemic led to an abrupt cancellation of the state meeting in 2020. Clubwomen were eager to make up for time lost.

Grundy Woman’s Club members in attendance at the state meeting were President Sandy Stiltner, Ginger Robertson, Bertha Street, and JoBeth Wampler. We were joined by other members of Southwestern District, including Eleanor Armes, of Richlands Woman’s Club; Heather Dunn, of Pearisburg Junior Woman’s Club; Jenny Martin and Susie Buracker, of Narrows Junior Woman’s Club; and Faye Bocock, of Pennington Gap Woman’s Club.

With a full schedule that kept our ladies hopping from morning till (and sometimes into) the night, we participated in a healthy discussion and vote to revise the state bylaws, heard from guest speakers, danced the night away during the Marjorie Branch Banquet, partied with district pals at our Southwestern District caucus, and watched our club president do the limbo!

Guest speakers included SiriusXM humorist and international best-selling author Jane Jenkins Herlong, GFWC Signature Program Chairman Jan Allen, and Armed Services YMCA Executive Director Laura Baxter. All provided insightful information, much-needed comedic relief, and thoughtful commentary that state clubwomen appeared to enjoy fully.

We were elated to learn that the Grundy club had tied for Second Place in the area of Community Improvement Project. And the juniorette club we sponsor – the Cobra Juniorettes – received Honorable Mention for both the GFWC Signature Program: Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention and the Director of Junior Clubs Award: GFWC Virginia Club of the Year.

Additionally, during the Alice Kyle Installation Banquet, Grundy clubwoman JoBeth Wampler was installed as GFWC Virginia Secretary. She will join GFWC Virginia President Bonnie Rosemond, First Vice President Susie Mowry, Second Vice President Cynthia Baroody, Third Vice President/Director of Junior Clubs Denise Price, and Treasurer Lynn Wherry.
