The GFWC Grundy Woman’s Club showered two high school seniors with all the essentials they’ll need as they head off to college in the fall.

Selected through a partnership with the Southwest Virginia Community College’s Upward Bound Program and Mountain Mission School, the College Shower has been a long-running project of the Grundy club. Typically held during the club’s May meeting, this year’s shower was held at Buchanan First Presbyterian Church in Grundy.

The SWCC Upward Bound recipient of our College Shower was Fred Clevinger, an upcoming graduate of Grundy High School. In the fall, Fred will be attending Alice Lloyd College. Coordinated by Education Chairwoman Kim Anderson-Long, the College Shower project asks clubwomen to sign up to provide a list of basic items for both students. Items might include: bed linens, comforters, pillows, towels, shower caddies, laundry baskets, laundry detergent and fabric softener, day planners, USB drives, Walmart gift cards, journals, desk lamps, plastic hangers, umbrellas, flashlights, backpacks, and more. This year, one clubwoman even baked our College Shower recipients cookies as a special treat.
